The Business End of the Season
In most previous seasons, there were clear front runners, but in every case they were Rangers o Celtic. But not this season, which is, I believe, good for our game as there is a media buzz about it, not just in Scotland but in the UK and indeed beyond.Let's look at the contenders. Hearts are going well under Derek Mclnnes and have been top of the table for most of the season. It's been 34 years since the Edinburgh club was top of the table for much of the season, and we all

Young Sportswriter of the Year: and the Winner is...
We are delighted to say that we got over 30 entries from universities across Scotland for this competition. Thanks are due to News UK Scotland, the publishers of The Times and Sunday Times Scotland and The Scottish Sun, for their support and encouragement. It's always good to see aspiring young journalists coming through the ranks and there were five entries we deemed good enough to be published here on our website. We'll publish the four runners-up first, followed by the

Andy’s Sting In The Tale (10/04/26) "I Agree With Eric"
(Sadly but Reluctantly, and after Careful and Painful Consideration) Who is this Eric I hear you think? What did he say? And why does Andy concur? I don’t actually know him but this Yorkshire ‘World Cup Veteran’ is “Searching for wisdom in a time of stupidity” and I like that. And it’s not a story the media will pick up on. This all started when my old pal Keith sent me a cutting of Eric’s succinct perspective, insight and reasoning and it reminded me of what I and many other

Boooo!
We're off to the World Cup, and as part of our preparations the SFA have, obviously, organised some friendly matches. These have not been successful, against Japan at Hampden, we got beat 1-0 and at the Hill Dickinson stadium, the new home of Everton, we also lost 1-0, this time to the Ivory Coast. International football is different to club level. For a start, the team as don't train and play together every week. For me, a friendly game is about getting fitness levels up

Andy’s Sting in the Tale (03/04/26) "Managing a Self-Made Decline?"
AKA When Chatter is Easier Than Change? So the countdown continues and we’ve now had 2 friendlies against higher rated World Cup Qualifier teams and lost both. Scotland players walked off at the end to some boo-ing from fans who wanted better results and felt justified that their entry money gives them the right to vocalise the displeasure they felt. I understand that but would have preferred that their energies were focussed on the realities rather than media created over-hy

Forrest Fire: Glasgow City Dethrone Rangers to Claim Sky Sports Cup Glory
In a dramatic afternoon at Fir Park, Glasgow City reestablished their dominance in Scottish women's football by defeating defending champions Rangers 2-1. A stunning two- minute blitz from the teenage sensation Lisa Forrest proved to be the difference, ending Rangers’ pursuit of a fourth consecutive title and securing City’s first Sky Sports cup since 2015. First Half Action The match began as a cagey, high-stakes encounter under grey Motherwell skies. Rangers, looking for

Andy’s Sting In The Tale (27/03/26) "Adrift for 76 Days"
In 76 days 5000-ish members of the Tartan Army will descend on Boston in a special fleet of yellow school buses from their temporary ‘Heilan Hame’ in Providence Rhode Island. A big Sesame Street adventure and journey that should take not much more than an hour on a wet night in winter but will. It will be ‘Box Office’ and a historic and joyous parade there and I hope back too with smiles all round. By coincidence 76 Days was the time that Rhode Island lone sailor Steve Callah

Bravehearts - Scotland’s Transplant Team
Recently, we saw the ugly side of football, however, there are other sides which show just why we love the game. No matter your background or ability, whether you are able-bodied or not, there are so many things that bring people from every walk of life together to play the beautiful game that we call football. I’d like to introduce you to one aspect of this beautiful game that, perhaps, you didn’t know existed… Scotland's first transplant team – a group of players who have

Andy's Sting In The Tale (20/03/26) "Ultras Shmultras"
Episode 1 of the 3 part BBC Scotland ‘Ultras’ documentaries started this week. Jordan, the programme’s director was articulate in the media ahead of it talking about how Ultras is an easy word to say but Ultras, the broad concept we all think we understand, is an informal but uncoordinated alliance of mostly younger fans and not a simple or simplistic blueprint of anything. A church so broad it can’t be pigeon-holed. that is apart from maybe where Ultras has become the new na

Andy's Sting In The Tale (13/03/26) "Maybe The Bams Did Us All a Favour Last Sunday?"
I wish it was funny but it wasn’t. Not funny in any way. The weekend Miekelson’s Bams Ran Riot, Again, March 8th 2026. A date and fan behaviour that could, I think bring a sea change to football in Scotland. But only if the country and the game actually wants it because it will have to drag some people kicking and screaming. On a sad anniversary day for Scotland when my old dad would have been 102, it’s not a bad time to put this all into perspective. The past is the past. Bu

A low point, and it’s time to act
With apologies to St Mirren and Dons’ fans, there is only one major issue in Scottish football this week. We have a good product on the park and one of the most competitive title races for years, the World Cup to look forward to, but still the same old issues off the field. Sometimes we think Scottish football is moving forward in and then the next minute/last weekend we get a reality check. Last Sunday was a low point in the season. When the quarter final cup tie between Ra

Our Ambassador for the Women's Game
We are delighted to announce that Vivienne McLaren has agreed to be the SFU's Ambassador for the women's game in Scotland. Welcome to our latest Fan Ambassador
The SFU is delighted to welcome Alan Rough MBE, one of the most popular and well-loved Scottish footballers of the past few decades. As anyone who has spent more than a few minutes in his company knows, Roughie is never far from a smile and a laugh, while his collection of anecdotes from his club and country days is justifiably famous, if not always suitable for a younger audience. A star of 53 Scottish international line-ups over more than a decade, with over 400 appearan
