The Scottish Football Heritage Project - Update

We are pleased to let you know the progress of the Project…
November 2026 Project Update
In June 2026, when the World Cup Finals kicked off, Historic Environment Scotland (HES) launched a Survey asking people to tell them about places of football heritage interest. The online survey ran into August and they were delighted with the positive response and engagement. It is clear our football heritage means a great deal to many people in Scotland!
What did you say
HES have had over 500 places that have been suggested for further consideration. An incredible collection of places that span centuries and cover the entire width and breadth of the country. We were pleased to see places brought to their attention that related to historic clubs no longer in existence, current teams from all levels of football and even individuals that influenced the game.
From the highlight reel
The list of submissions is too long to publish just now but a small selection to show the variation and wide scope include:
West of Scotland Cricket ground
Heart of Midlothian mosaic
Billy Liddell Memorial, Dunfermline
Glenbuck Park, original home of Cherrypickers
Various meeting places where clubs were established and formally set up
A selection of Junior and Highland League football grounds
The Meadows, Edinburgh
Next steps
The HES project team now has the fascinating but sizeable task of looking at the 500+ submissions and deciding which should be investigated further. They will check their existing site records, look at historic and modern mapping and carry out initial historical research. Some of the submissions might not have enough scope for them to take further. They expect many submissions will lead to online record creation and enhancement as places recorded within their National Record of the Historic Environment (NRHE) on www.trove.scot . Finally, a smaller selection of submitted places could have potential for more detailed investigation including site recording and Designation assessments.
Look out for future project updates in early 2027!
