In a dramatic afternoon at Fir Park, Glasgow City reestablished their dominance in Scottish women's football by defeating defending champions Rangers 2-1. A stunning two- minute blitz from the teenage sensation Lisa Forrest proved to be the difference, ending Rangers’ pursuit of a fourth consecutive title and securing City’s first Sky Sports cup since 2015.
First Half Action
The match began as a cagey, high-stakes encounter under grey Motherwell skies. Rangers, looking for their fourth consecutive Sky Sports Cup title, controlled much of the early possession. Their best chance of the half fell to Kim Shin Ji, whose beautifully cushioned volley beat City keeper Lee Gibson but agonisingly rattled the crossbar.
City, however, remained disciplined. While they were limited to counterattacks, their defensive line - led by the resilient Kimberly Smit - refused to buckle. Rangers’ Katie Wilkinson saw a powerful header palmed away by Gibson, ensuring the teams went into the interval deadlocked.
The Game-Changing Double
The complexity of the game changed entirely in a frantic two-minute window just after the hour mark. In the 62nd minute, City earned a corner which was whipped in dangerously by Lisa Evans. Amidst a scramble in the six- yard box, Lisa Forrest reacted quickest to bundle the ball home, sending the City fans into rapture.
Before Rangers could catch their breath, Forrest produced a moment of pure magic. Winning the ball back in midfield, the 19-year-old drove forward and, from 25 yards out, unleashed a swerving, dipping strike that rocketed into the top corner. It was a goal worthy of any final and left Rangers stunned at 2-0 down.
Rangers Late Surge
Refusing to surrender their trophy without a fight, Rangers threw everything forward in the closing stages. Manager Leanne Crichton introduced fresh legs, and the pressure finally told in the 88th minute. A lapse in the City defence allowed the striker Katie Wilkinson space in the box, and the striker made no mistake, firing low past Gibson to set up a grandstand finish.
Rangers pushed for a stoppage- time equaliser, launching a series of long balls and corners into the City box. However, the Glasgow City defence held resolutely, throwing bodies behind the ball to see out the victory and reclaimed the trophy they last held over a decade ago.
Player of the Match
While the whole City back line deserved credit for weathering the late storm, Lisa Forrest was the undisputed star. Her clinical finishing and work rate typified a Glasgow City side that looked hungrier on the day. At just 19, she has firmly established herself as one of the brightest talents in the SWPL.
The Verdict
For Glasgow City, this victory is a statement of intent. After a period where Rangers and Celtic have dominated the silverware conversations, Leanne Ross’s side proved they are still a major force. For Rangers, the loss marks the end of an era of dominance in this competition, leaving them to focus on a tightly contested league race.
Glasgow City now lift their seventh Sky Sports Cup, equalling the all-time record and setting the stage for a thrilling conclusion to the domestic season.
