I’m really pleased to welcome Angelina Nayar to the SFU women’s team. Angelina, is currently studying the MA Multimedia Journalism Master’s course at Glasgow Caledonian University, with a particular interest in football and sports journalism. She is the sole NCTJ, Sky Sports News, and PA Media student football journalist bursary award winner for 2025/26 as they recognise her keen interest and dedication to reporting on the sport and, in particular, her accomplished writing skills.
Angelina told me, “Football has always been a huge passion of mine, particularly the women’s game. But my interest goes far beyond watching it, as I love analysing and reporting on football. I have executed this through my student radio show, where I hosted a weekly segment on English women’s football and especially enjoyed breaking down matches and tactics for my co-hosts, who were unfamiliar with the sport. I also valued writing freelance features and opinion pieces for independent women’s football magazines and blogs as it gave me the freedom to explore my voice as a journalist and reaffirmed my love for telling stories about the game. My editing and leadership skills were deeply improved whilst I served as the Head of Editing for the student magazine, The Gay Saint, for two years as I learned to approach topics with sensitivity and how to create diverse stories about the evolving and exciting space that is women's sports.
“I also gained my Level 6 Sports Leaders Qualification and ASDAN Disability Awareness Qualification as I am passionate about leading children of all abilities through their physical education. Alongside my studies I enjoy playing rugby for the GCU university team as well as lending myself to teams across the west of Scotland for weekend matches. Doing this allows me to meet terrific sports people and open my eyes to stories I would have never known about.”
Angelina has also filmed, photographed, and created social media posts for the British Premier Kabaddi League tournament at the Fit XPo in Birmingham, and set up interviews with players from all over the world, as well as photographing and interviewing at the Scottish Women in Sports Awards which celebrated women who made a notable impact on Scottish sports.
